100 years ago today, lawyer Inez Milholland Boissevain mounted a white horse and rode astride as the first of four mounted heralds in the Women’s Suffrage Parade that changed modern history.

Her costume and the horse were intended to mirror the image on the cover of the parade program:

Three years after the parade, she collapsed and died at age thirty during a western suffrage lecture tour.

Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was the first African American woman to earn an aviator’s license. Unable to find anyone willing to train a black woman to fly in the US, Bessie learned French so that she could learn to fly in France. She was the first American of any race or gender to earn an international pilot’s license.

Bessie died at age 34 during a test flight for an exhibition in Jacksonville, Florida.

Bessie is profiled in a Smithsonian Channel documentary entitled Black Wings, which is airing this month. An excerpt from the documentary can be seen here. If you are interested in black female pilots, check out the novel Flygirl.

“We should be able to celebrate this policy change as a victory for gender equality. If this country is going to have a state of the art military, if we’re going to hold that force up as representing the best of us, then women shouldn’t be excluded from serving. Women, as they’ve proved over and over again on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, can do the work as well as men can, and that should be recognized. Whatever you think of the wars and the armed forces, this should be an egalitarian victory for our women troops. And yet, when a woman in the armed forces has a higher chance of being raped by a fellow servicemember than of being killed by the enemy, it is awfully hard to celebrate.”
